British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, American Airlines and United all operate daily direct flights from London Heathrow. Norwegian and other budget airlines occasionally offer competitive fares. Flight time is approximately 8 hours westbound.

Practical Information for UK Travellers
ESTA: Required for all UK visitors to the US. Apply online at esta.cbp.dhs.gov — costs $21 and is valid for two years or until your passport expires. Apply at least 72 hours before travel.
Health insurance: US medical costs are extraordinarily high — comprehensive travel insurance is absolutely essential. A single night in a US hospital can cost tens of thousands of pounds.
Tipping: 18–20% is expected in restaurants and bars. Tipping is not optional — it forms a significant part of service workers’ income. Budget for it.
Airport to city: From JFK, the AirTrain to Jamaica and then the subway to Manhattan costs around $10 and takes 45–60 minutes. A taxi costs $70 fixed rate. The subway is by far the best value option.
